Your guide to the Australian Global Talent visa program
If you are a highly skilled professional, the global talent visa program also called Global Talent Independent (GTI) Program might be a good option to consider with 15,000 places up for grabs this financial year. This program is designed to attract highly talented individuals, with entrepreneurial ideas and cutting-edge skills within target industry sectors. The aim is to help grow Australia’s innovation and tech economies whilst creating opportunities for Australians by transferring skills, promoting innovation, and creating jobs. The government label this visa: ‘Australia’s potential brain gain’. Below is a summary of the Australian global talent visa
To qualify for this visa, your skills must fall under one of the following GTI program target sectors:
- Space and Advanced Manufacturing
- Energy and Mining Technology
- Cyber Security
- Quantum Information,
- Advanced Digital,
- Data Science
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for this visa, you must be internationally recognised with outstanding achievements in one of the above sectors. You must also be prominent in your field of expertise, give evidence of how you will benefit Australia, prove you will have no difficult in getting a job in Australia or become established in your field.
To get this visa, you must be:
- nominated by an individual in Australia or a recognised organisation in the same field as you.
- Meet a high standard and show exceptional track record with high personal achievement- examples for those who can qualify include those who have been working in senior roles, patents, professional awards and international publications and memberships.
PHD graduates and candidates
The program has space for PHD graduates and candidates who are nearly finished with their thesis. They must however prove they have an exceptional talent and international recognition in of the sectors required by the government.
High Income threshold
You must prove that you attract a salary of $153,600+ if you come to Australia and work. This amount is based on the Fair Work High Income threshold, which increases every 1 July.
As you are not yet employed in Australia, things the department will consider will include your current salary in your home country, any future job offers including how much they pay as well as recent PHD graduates pay in your sector.
1) Expression of Interest
The first step in this process is an Expression of Interest (EOI) application.
In this application the department will ask for your basic personal details, whether you are in or out of Australia, your sector, job title and employment details including proof of your salary, your education details, a statement that describe your global talent and your internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement and how you can make a significant contribution to the Australian economy.
In the EOI and the visa application, you must be nominated by one of the following:
- An Australian citizen;
- An Australian permanent resident;
- An Eligible New Zealand citizen;
- An Australian organisation with a national reputation in the same field as you.
Your nominator will need to attest to your achievements and international standing. Your nominator does not have to offer you a job or assist you to become established in Australia.
The nominator will need to their contact details, a copy of their passport (if available), a nomination form or a reference letter. You must disclose how you know the nominator.
3) Apply for the visa
Once the department issue a unique identifier, you can then apply for the Global Talent Visa – Subclass 858 either onshore or offshore. You must also meet the other requirement for this visa which include being a benefit to the Australian community, the ability to establish yourself in Australia, international recognition, functional English and meet health and character requirements.
Global Talent Employer Sponsored (GTES) program
The Global Talent Independent program (GTI) is different from the Global Talent Employer Sponsored (GTES) program which focuses on employer sponsorship for highly skilled niche positions that cannot be filled with local Australian workers. The GTES program qualifies you for a visa under the Temporary Skill Shortage TSS visa (Subclass 482).
The process is completely different from the Global Talent visa and requires that you secure employment in Australia and be nominated and sponsored by your Australian future employer. Additionally, this visa is temporary (with a potential pathway to permanent visa) unlike the Global Talent visa, which is a permanent one.
