2. What is the difference between a ‘Registered Migration Agent’ and a ‘Migration Agent’?

Many people confused Registered Migration Agents and Migration Agents. A Registered Migration Agent is someone who holds a current migration agent licence issued by the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA also referred to as OMARA), if the agent does not hold a licence they are not qualified to provide immigration advice and assistance. Some people refer to Registered Migration Agents as RMA’s or MARA agents.

Registered Migration Agents can

  • Check that all the necessary documentation is included and meets the Australian government’s standard for that particular visa subclass
  • Monitor your visa application and follow up with the Australian immigration department if necessary
  • Contact and liaise with the Australian immigration department if required

  • Update you with recent changes to the law

5. Is it mandatory to lodge my Australian visa application using a migration agent?

It is not mandatory to lodge your Australian visa application using a migration agent. However, if you are not confident in lodging your application by yourself you should consider contacting a Registered Migration Agent.

6. If I use a Registered Migration Agent will it help fast-track my application?

A Registered Migration Agent cannot fast-track your Australian visa application. However, as Registered Migration Agents are familiar with the process, given they deal with it on a daily basis it may save you time if a Registered Migration Agent prepares and lodges your application on your behalf.

7. Can a Registered Migration Agent guarantee me a visa?

No migration agent (registered or unregistered) can influence your visa or guarantee you an Australian visa.

8. Can I use a migration agent who is located outside of Australia?

It is best to use a registered migration agent (as opposed to a migration agent who is not registered) and it does not matter where they are located. The work is typically done via phone calls and emails. There are agents who are registered with the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA also referred to as OMARA) who are located outside of Australia. Be warned there are many migration agents practicing outside of Australia who are not registered and therefore have not necessarily been through the qualifications and police checks that Registered Migration Agents must go through in order to obtain their licence from the Australian government.

9. How much does it cost to use a Registered Migration Agent?

The cost will vary depending on the visa type (referred to as visa subclass) that you are applying for, how complex your case is and sometimes even how many people are in your application. Some agents who have many years of experience or are also qualified lawyers may charge higher prices due to their experience or qualification.
